Roy DeCarava, the child of a single mother in Harlem, turned that neighborhood into his canvas. <\/span>He went on to become one of the most important photographers of his generation by chronicling the lives of its ordinary people and its jazz giants. DeCarava was the first African American photographer to win a Guggenheim Fellowship. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest award given to artists by the United States Government. In one of the longest careers in the field of fine art photography, DeCarava produced five major books, including The Sound I Saw<\/em> and The Sweet Flypaper of Life<\/em> as well as landmark museum catalogs and retrospective surveys from the Friends of Photography and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.<\/em><\/p>\n
