This period was highly creative for Miller, and many of his best known works were written during his time there. His novels were smuggled into the country, building Miller an underground cult reputation. He would go on to become a major influence on the new <em>Beat generation<\/em> of American writers, most notably Jack Kerouac. Miller also wrote travel memoirs, essays, and was an accomplished painter.
