He witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which led to his first published novel, <em>From Here to Eternity<\/em> (1951). <em>The Thin Red Line<\/em> (1962) reflected his combat experiences on Guadalcanal and <em>Whistle<\/em> was based on his hospital stay in Memphis, Tennessee, recovering from surgery. James Jones died in 1977 before finishing <em>Whistle. <\/em>The final three chapters were completed by Willie Morris based on taped conversations with the author and extensive notes he&#8217;d already written. Adapted into the Academy Award-winning Fred Zinnemann directed film with Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra and Ernest Borgnine.
