Ed van der Elsken first realized that he wanted to be a photographer when, in 1947, he saw a book of pictures by the American photographer Weegee, Naked City. Weegee and his vision of urban life became a crucial influence on Ed van der Elsken’s work. Like Robert Frank and William Klein, he felt strongly drawn toward the darker side of human existence.
In 1959, armed with commissions from two magazines and from Netherlands TV, Ed van der Elsken and his wife Gerda van der Veen set off on a round-the-world trip that was to last almost a year. He worked in a number of countries in Africa, Asia, and America; his photographs regularly appeared in magazines, and he contributed short films to television programs. Six years after his return, he published a selection of photographs from the trip under the title Sweet Life.
Much of his work subjectively documented his own energetic and eccentric life experience, presaging the work of Larry Clark, Nan Goldin or Wolfgang Tillmans. Ed van der Elsken abolishes the frontiers between the professional and private spheres, and also between photography and real life.

Marc Chagall took inspiration from Belarusian folk-life, and portrayed many Biblical themes that reflected his Jewish heritage. In the 1960s and 1970s, Chagall engaged in a series of large-scale projects involving public spaces and important civic and religious buildings. Chagall’s artworks are difficult to categorize. Working in the pre-World War I Paris art world, he was involved with avant-garde currents, however, his work was consistently on the fringes of popular art movements and emerging trends, including Cubism and Fauvism, among others. He was closely associated with the Paris School and its exponents, including Amedeo Modigliani.

Henry Spencer Moore (1898–1986) was an English artist best known for his monumental bronze sculptures which are located around the world. His forms are usually abstractions of the human figure, typically depicting mother-and-child or reclining figures. Moore’s works are usually suggestive of the female body, apart from a phase in the 1950s when he sculpted family groups. His forms are generally pierced or contain hollow spaces. Many interpreters liken the undulating form of his reclining figures to the landscape and hills of his birthplace of Yorkshire.

Elaine De Kooning – Paintings and Drawings
De Kooning, Elaine
· Category: Sold ·
Robert Rauschenberg was a painter, photographer, printmaker, choreographer, onstage performer, set designer and, in later years, even a composer, Mr. Rauschenberg defied the traditional idea that an artist stick to one medium or style. He pushed, prodded and sometimes reconceived all the mediums in which he worked. Building on the legacies of Marcel Duchamp, Kurt Schwitters, Joseph Cornell and others, he helped obscure the lines between painting and sculpture, painting and photography, photography and printmaking, sculpture and photography, sculpture and dance, sculpture and technology, technology and performance art — not to mention between art and life. Rauschenberg was also instrumental in pushing American art onward from Abstract Expressionism, the dominant movement when he emerged, during the early 1950s. He became a transformative link between artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning and those who came next, artists identified with Pop, Conceptualism, Happenings, Process Art and other new kinds of art in which he played a signal role.
